2020 has ended; a new beginning has started. What do you want to achieve this year?
No, I’m not asking you to create new resolutions nor telling you to be consistent with your goals.
In fact, I want to remind you that you’ll most likely fail.
Every year, millions of people failed to fulfill their goals; for a reason, we might never realize.
The human mind isn’t that great at calculating times. If we can rate skills from 1-10 in terms of difficulty, computing times might be level 100.
This makes goal setting so challenging. Thus slow down your growth significantly.
I’m serious, we’re terrible at planning. We think we can achieve something in 1 year, 2 years, or even 5 years, while it’s not. It took more than that.
Okay, that’s maybe a little bit too far. Maybe, take a smaller example for instance:
You plan a project to be finished in 2 weeks, then it turns out it took 3 weeks.
How about a small assignment. Maybe write an email and make some reports. Let’s say you plan to work on it for 2 hours, only to be finished in 3 hours.
Do you see the point I’m making here?
We’re terrible at forecasting. We can’t predict the times accurately.
This makes goal setting seems so challenging. Either you want to achieve something tangible, or just want to master some skills, you’ll have a hard time figuring out the times you’d need.
However, Elon Musk has a special trick that will help you get past the obstacle. If you know this, you’ll grow faster than you have ever before.
“Stop being patient and start asking yourself, how do I accomplish my 10 years plan in 6 months?
You will probably fail but you will be a lot further ahead of the person who simply accepted it was going to take 10 years.”
You’re highly unlikely to achieve ten years goals in 6 months. But you surely have reached closer to your dream than you were before.
You’re highly unlikely to master something you’d really want in 6 months. But you have grown the skills enormously faster than anyone else.
If you want to be the best version of yourself as fast as possible, then this is the way to go.
